The Blue Valentine awards show freight train pulled into the Kips Bay AMC in New York City on Thursday night and the perpetually stoic stars of the film, Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, got downright hysterical. In the span of just ten minutes the prettier-than-thou duo were retelling stories of nipple bleeding, the recent overturn of their film’s controversial rating and the rumored trysts of Marilyn Monroe. Are these two joking their way to (deserved) Oscar nominations?
For such a bummer film it seems that America’s favorite hipster actor towheads really did enjoy their time playing an increasingly disenchanted married couple. Save the 15-hour shower scene, complete with cheap hotel soap, the pair had to shoot. “It was our last day of shooting,” Ryan proudly told the crowd. “At one point I looked down and our nipples were bleeding.”
More challenging than the duo’s nipple sensitivity was the film’s climactic Manhattan Bridge scene, where Hollywood almost managed to lose one of it’s brightest young talents. [Minor Spoiler ahead] The scene finds Williams unwilling to share a hidden secret and Gosling doing everything he can to get it out of her. Gosling, Method champion he is, managed to not just climb the fence of the historic bridge to get Williams to spill, but also nearly dangled his body over the side in an attempt to get her to open up to him.
“[Derek Cianfrance] told me whatever you do, get Michelle to tell you her secret. And he told Michelle, whatever you do don’t tell Ryan your secret,” Gosling explained. “So we filmed all day and nothing happened. Then I was on the side of the bridge looking down — and we didn’t have the insurance to cover that — and I realized Derek had brainwashed me and Michelle Williams was trying to kill me.”
Williams was not present for the exchange, having arrived late and literally sprinting to the film’s Q & A, but it appears that, too, may be a result of her newfound affinity for the Method process. “I just played Marilyn Monore and I read that she would have the cab driver drop her off three blocks away from where she needed to be and run the whole way so it would appear as if she had just come from some fantastic tryst,” the petite, and winded, actress said.
Gosling was even able to joke about the film’s rightful rating overturn by the MPAA, and lament the fact he is no longer the star of a NC-17 picture. “I kind of miss it,” he said. “We’re officially not pornographers now though, which is nice.”
