NBC Has Memento Disease, Is Mulling Over Comedy At 10 PM

jay_leno_500.jpgShades of 2009! As the recession-themed, extremely poor-rated Apprentice wraps up, NBC is left with a gaping hole in its once-venerable Thursday night line-up. So what’s a poor, fourth-place network to do? Why, return to one of the worst idea in television history and put comedy on at 10 P.M., that’s what they’ll do.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that NBC is considering moving 30 Rock to 10 PM, following by returning favorite Parks and Recreation at 10:30; in the old 30 Rock-spot would be new sitcom, Perfect Couples. Community and The Office and the comedy abortion known as Outsourced would stay in place, creating a three hour comedy behemoth on Thursday night.

Some NBC apparatchik thinks though the move might be risky, it could “create buzz.” It sure could! Why, it could even be on the cover Time magazine! And then, later, on the cover of Entertainment Weekly! Such buzz!

Listen I’m all in favor of doing whatever can be done to extend the life of the woefully-under-appreciated Community, by far the funniest comedy on TV right now. But I think the last comedy at 10 PM debacle proved that people are pretty set in their timeslotted ways: funny jokey ha-has at 8 & 9, and cops & rape at 10. Why not just put Law & Order: SVU in the Trump Spot, and put two comedies in its place at 9 on Wednesday? Expanding their comedies (which used to be the jewels in NBC’s crown) to more than one night may even create…buzz! Buzz! BUZZ, I SAY!
