Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer: Now with More Monsters

Leader image for Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer: Now with More Monsters

Normally if someone said that a trailer opened with a talking lion on the beach parting the ocean for a group of children, they’d have my attention. But somehow this image is squandered in the new, curiously low-key trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. There are some great images here, but the entire affair feels subdued, and maybe a bit tired. Like poor Aslan the talking lion walked a thousand miles through snow and ice to get to that beach.

Maybe it’s the fact that the trailer spends a bit too long lingering on the kids gushing about the fact that they’re back in Narnia, as if they can’t believe it happened. Though, I suppose after the luke-warm box office success of Prince Caspian and the long wait for this new installment, maybe it does merit a moment or two of disbelief. There’s quite a bit of adventure here, but it’s still hard to tell what the movie’s about. And the lazy, temp-sounding music and awkward pacing of the trailer isn’t doing the film any favors.

To be fair, there are also things to like. The visual effects look mostly top-rate, and there’s enough adventure, light humor, dragons and talking animals to please fans of the series. Plus this one has monsters. Big monsters coming out of the sea that must be killed with spears. Anyone who missed the last two installments, but liked Clash of the Titans take note.

Verdict: Ask me again after the new Harry Potter comes out.
