Kevin Smith Kicks Off Red State Podcast with Audio Teaser For the Film

red state_225.jpgThis week, Kevin Smith released the first episode of his “Red State of the Union” podcast, where he promises to hold an informal press conference with new information about his upcoming “Christ-sploitation” horror satire. For the first episode, those who tune in can listen to the teaser he cut for the film. Yeah, my eyebrows raised a bit too, but oddly enough, it kind of works…

Apparently a small group in the studio saw the teaser with actual images, but thus far it doesn’t look like anyone has leaked a crappy cell phone video. In this age of crazy interactive trailers, it seems like Smith could at least go wide with the entire teaser instead of just the sound, no?

That said, the audio stands alone pretty well. Smith admits that there’s not much in the way of plot here and that he mostly wanted this first piece to reflect the mood. I suppose it works in that sense, picture or no. You’ll certainly avoid eye contact with your local fundamentalist Christian preacher afterwords.

Listen to it at Smodcast, then try to guess what kind of images this audio played over. An scary preacher just speaking to the camera? A black screen with the title flashing on and off, Gaspar Noe-style? Jay and Silent Bob slipping on banana peels?
