Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon Join the Circus in the Water For Elephants Trailer

Leader image for Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon Join the Circus in the Water For Elephants Trailer

While the Water For Elephants trailer certainly doesn’t skimp on the elephants, it’s oddly lacking in clowns, lion tamers and all of the other outcasts and oddities that make the circus so fascinating. I suppose that seeing Robert Patinson and Reese Witherspoon hang out with an elephant is almost as interesting, but still, if Hollywood is going to go to the circus, it’d be nice if they went all the way.

But yes, it’s insuppressible romance under the big top between Witherspoon and Pattinson, with the jealous Christoph Waltz doing his damndest to suppress it. An elephant hangs out in the background for most of the movie and sometimes the two leads rest their head on it or pet it. I’m betting they also bring it water, unless that’s a metaphor.

It really is a likable trailer: The production design and cinematography look great, the actors look great; hell, even that elephant looks pretty sharp. And with Sara Gruen’s much-loved best seller as the source material, it initially seems like an an unstoppable package. But, part of the romance of the circus is the dirt and the jagged edges, neither of which are present in this glossed-over trailer. The book supposedly features supporting characters like a dwarf named Kinko and an old man named Camel who can’t move his arms, but I didn’t see them in the trailer. Here’s hoping that they’re in the film because everyone here looks like they could just as easily be in The Great Gastby.

Verdict: Still holding out for the U.S. release of The Last Circus.

Topher Grace Can't Hardly Wait in the Take Me Home Tonight Trailer

Leader image for Topher Grace Can't Hardly Wait in the Take Me Home Tonight Trailer

Well, if nothing else, maybe Take Me Home Tonight will go down as the death rattle for the 80s nostalgia coming-of-age film. It’s set in 1988, so I suppose maybe we’ll see one in a few years set in 1989, but based on this trailer, I’d say it’s about time to move on. It’s actually bizarre how comfortable the marketing for this film seems with every single overused last-great-party-of-youth cliche known to man. That said, the film does have one secret weapon, and as with Yogi Bear trailer, it’s extremely under-utilized here.

That weapon is Anna Faris, who has proved in Gregg Araki’s Smiley Face and the surprisingly charming House Bunny that she’s one of the funniest, most talented actresses working in comedy. She has the funniest dialogue in this trailer, but then mostly disappears after that. Instead we get Topher Grace doing the self-deprecating thing and Dan Fogler doing the outrageous fat sidekick thing. They go to a huge party. Wacky hijinx ensue. Grace crushes on a hot girl from school. And then, right as the DJ spins Eddie Money’s unforgettable hit, they all find themselves. The end.

Verdict: Pass.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon Announcement Trailer: Meet the Wise Grandfather-bot

Leader image for Transformers: Dark of the Moon Announcement Trailer: Meet the Wise Grandfather-bot

I’m happy to report that the new “announcement trailer” for Transformers: Dark of the Moon is almost entirely comprehensible. None of the effects shots move faster than the human brain, and there’s actually a nice sense of atmosphere and build-up to the whole thing. Maybe Michael Bay listened to the backlash from the last film. It’s also possible though that none of this footage is actually in the movie since I have no idea what an “announcement trailer” actually is.

In case you’ve forgotten, this film stars Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel and Patrick Dempsey. But none of those people are in this trailer. Instead, backing up the cold-war plot leaked by that children’s pop-up book, this trailer takes us back to the moon landing in the 60s when we showed Russia who was boss.

But it turns out that astronauts found something surprising on the dark side of, I mean, in the dark of the moon. Hint: It’s a transformer. This particular transformer appears to be very old and wise (see above photo). He even has what I think is a robot beard. Let’s hope he advised Bay on how to direct some of the fight scenes.

Verdict: I’m still holding out for Transformers: Wish You Here, but explain to me what an “announcement trailer” is in relation to a trailer and a teaser, and then we’ll talk.

African Cats Trailer: Are Baby Lions as Cute as Penguins?

Leader image for African Cats Trailer: Are Baby Lions as Cute as Penguins?

I suppose the trailer for Disney’s nature documentary African Cats kind of begs for a lot of smart-ass jokes about cornering the same “people-like-documentaries-about-cute-stuff” market as March of the Penguins and Babies. So much so that making said jokes seems kind of obvious and futile. Uh…plus that shot of the mother cheetah carrying her cub in her mouth is really adorable.

My only actual complaint about this preview is the schmaltzy soft-rock guy crooning “Life is beautiful” over the video footage. I remedied this by playing the trailer with no volume and different iTunes selections of my own choosing, which actually made the trailer fantastic. First I tried “Welcome to the Jungle” and then “Jungleland” by Bruce Springsteen. Then I realized that the Sahara is technically not the jungle at all and gave up after my search for rock songs about the Sahara yielded no results. Suggestions are welcome.

But yes, if you like cute animals doing cute things and fighting for survival (while being cute), Disney’s got your number. Also, I am almost as curious abouts who wins the lion vs. crocodile battle that the trailer hints at as I am about whether a Crocosaurus can beat a Mega Shark.

Verdict: Sold, but I’m bringing an iPod.

Prom Trailer: Is Disney the New King of High School Cinema?

Leader image for Prom Trailer: Is Disney the New King of High School Cinema?

I’ve waited years for a movie to get prom right. Mean Girls came close with its ludicrous prom queen coronation sequence, but otherwise you rarely see prom depicted for what it is (at least to me): a disillusioning display of social status, pettiness and rented decorations. Teen cinema is so often invested in “popularity” as a legitimate high school force that proms are treated like magical and climactic events as opposed to well-chaperoned letdowns. But maybe Disney is on to something with its new movie Prom, a flick that looks a bit more Degrassi than de rigeur.

Prom, like Degrassi, at least understands that all upperclassmen aren’t created equal. “Prom, it’s like the Olympics of high school,” Lloyd (Nicolas Braun) says. “You wait four years, three people have a good time, and everybody else gets to live on with shattered dreams.” So that’s cute. But he’s still arguing that prom means everything to everyone, and that sounds like most regurgitated Hughesian cinema of the past 25 years. Disney, you’re being Disney right now.

The mirage grows as the trailer goes on. “Who we were for four years of high school… doesn’t matter,” a voiceover coos. Ugh. Honey, I swear prom is just an expensive occasion for nerds to learn what a boutonniere is. If you toilet-paper your drama club director’s house beforehand, I guarantee it’ll be more fun than prom.

Cliches aside, Prom’s cast seems unpretentious enough to tolerate for 90 minutes. We have a Christie Brinkley haircut, a rebel motorcyclist, and a fashion-obsessed junior in our midst. Fun. I just hope they’ve evolved slightly since we first met them in 1986.

Verdict: If escapist, wholly reiterative fun is what you’re after, Prom will court you.

Stranger in a Strange Land: Excellent Trailer for Claire Denis' White Material Arrives

Leader image for Stranger in a Strange Land: Excellent Trailer for Claire Denis' White Material Arrives

Stories about about families trying to protect their farm or home from insurmountable outside forces have been told quite a few times. Usually they involve money or maybe some corporation or rival family (if we’re talking Westerns). But in Claire Denis’ The White Material Isabelle Huppert must contend with Post-Colonialism and civil war turmoil in modern Africa to save her coffee plantation. And yeah, as this trailer suggests, things get a little more complicated then.

The fact alone that Denis directed the film is cause for excitement. She’s one of the most interesting and consistent working filmmakers and her previous film 35 Shots of Rum showed that she’s still at the top of her game. While that film explored subtle family dynamics in France at a meditative pace, the drama in this one looks like it explodes off the screen with more than just telling glances and impromptu dance scenes. Denis grew up in Colonial Africa, and she’s explored the area before in films like Chocolat, but never with the verve and energy present in this trailer. Also, Hupert looks determined and convincing (yet still beautiful) in the lead role.

Verdict: Sold! If you don’t live in one of the opening cities, IFC will be beaming this one to cable boxes nationwide via their On Demand service.

Jason Statham and Ben Foster Fix Almost Everybody in The Mechanic Trailer

Leader image for Jason Statham and Ben Foster Fix Almost Everybody in The Mechanic Trailer

Of course by “fix,” I actually mean kill…with assault rifles, cars crashed through buses and more. Yep, it’s the trailer for the remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie that involves an ace hitman (Jason Statham in this case) who takes on an apprentice (Ben Foster) with with quite a bit of reluctance. That is, until their company betrays them and kills the Statham’s friend and Foster’s father; then it’s time for the two to put their differences aside, grab their tools (read: guns) and go to work.

Statham is clearly still down to play the same role in almost every film, and as I’ve noted, he’s good at that. So, fine. But the main thing that stands out about the trailer is the presence of Foster, who has proven enormously talented in The Messenger and Alpha Dog. It’s hard to tell if he does much in the movie besides shoot things, but I’m crossing my fingers that pairing him with Statham will create a dynamic heretofore unseen in hitman action movies.

Other than that, I’d like to suggest that someone compose an official “Jason Statham” theme song. Make it sound just like the music in this and every Transporter trailer, but give it a little more character. Then, secure a deal to where it will be used in every trailer that stars Statham. Some aspiring composer will bank while Statham builds even more of a brand for himself. Everybody wins!

Verdict: Sold. And again reminded that Robert Pattinson is lucky this awesome rumor was not true.

Aliens attack LA again in Battle: Los Angeles Trailer

Leader image for Aliens attack LA again in Battle: Los Angeles Trailer

Screenwriters have finally stumbled upon the perfect revenge-fantasy-outlet for their Los Angeles angst. Just as aliens head to theaters today to devour the city in Skyline, here comes the teaser for Battle: Los Angeles, in which a presumably different group of aliens turn LA into a total war zone. These scenarios are probably comforting to imagine after the second hour stuck in traffic, waiting for some flaky producer to call back. Anyway, this is a great trailer - Something like Black Hawk Down in Los Angeles…with aliens.

For a teaser, this preview seems to reveal quite a bit of the film, though the aliens remain obscured. At the same time, it’s so stylized and self-contained (the images and music are married perfectly here), that it’s hard to tell whether this is a great trailer for a great film or simply a great trailer. The one moment where an alien begins to materialize out of thin air kind of kills the mood. On the other hand, it’s hard to ignore the visceral impact of how convincingly director Jonathan Liebesman turns the west coast into a frantic battleground.

Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez are in this somewhere, but with all of the explosions and army fatigues, I had to watch the trailer twice to pick them out.

Verdict: I’m going to wait and see what Kim Kardashian thinks.

If the trailer gets pulled, head over to Apple.

Trailer for Jane Eyre Promises Nightmares

Leader image for Trailer for Jane Eyre Promises Nightmares

While you’re waiting for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies to arrive and finally deliver the blood-splattered Victorian-era zombie comedy that we all so desperately need, take a look at the trailer Cary Fukunaga’s Jane Eyre and reflect on how truly scary Victorian-era England can be. According to this preview, it’s actually horrifying, with an atmosphere of dread and despair that would probably make even the undead want to cower in a corner.

Starring Mia Wasikowska in the titular role, the trailer plays up the dark, brooding aspects of Charlotte Bront?’s novel with a gray color palate and plenty of fog, rain and fire. And in case the child abuse, Victorian repression, threats of damnation and subtle supernatural touches don’t get under your skin, the trailer’s creepy stop-and-start score finishes the job. Prepare to be terrified of going to church, falling in love and moving into big houses.

This novel has been adapted to death, but the stylish trailer does a great job of separating this new version from the rest. Also, the supporting cast including Judi Dench, Michael Fassbender and Sally Hawkins is stellar, and Fukunaga’s Sin Nombre showed great promise.

Verdict: Sold.

Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer: Now with More Monsters

Leader image for Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader Trailer: Now with More Monsters

Normally if someone said that a trailer opened with a talking lion on the beach parting the ocean for a group of children, they’d have my attention. But somehow this image is squandered in the new, curiously low-key trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. There are some great images here, but the entire affair feels subdued, and maybe a bit tired. Like poor Aslan the talking lion walked a thousand miles through snow and ice to get to that beach.

Maybe it’s the fact that the trailer spends a bit too long lingering on the kids gushing about the fact that they’re back in Narnia, as if they can’t believe it happened. Though, I suppose after the luke-warm box office success of Prince Caspian and the long wait for this new installment, maybe it does merit a moment or two of disbelief. There’s quite a bit of adventure here, but it’s still hard to tell what the movie’s about. And the lazy, temp-sounding music and awkward pacing of the trailer isn’t doing the film any favors.

To be fair, there are also things to like. The visual effects look mostly top-rate, and there’s enough adventure, light humor, dragons and talking animals to please fans of the series. Plus this one has monsters. Big monsters coming out of the sea that must be killed with spears. Anyone who missed the last two installments, but liked Clash of the Titans take note.

Verdict: Ask me again after the new Harry Potter comes out.

Forget Your Troubles and Let The Illusionist Trailer Take You Somewhere Magical

Leader image for Forget Your Troubles and Let The Illusionist Trailer Take You Somewhere Magical

Speaking of old-school animation, the new trailer for The Illusionist serves as a perfect reminder of just how captivating the art form can be. Based on an unproduced screenplay by the great Jacques Tati and directed by Sylvain Chomet (The Triplettes of Belleville), even the film’s trailer transports viewers to a new world. And it looks much more fantastic and inspiring than this one.

There’s always something simultaneously heartbreaking, romantic and uplifting about watching people who strive (literally, in this case) for true magic in a world that is sadly lacking. The sublime way Chomet animates the down-and-out magician and his fat rabbit here only heightens all of these feelings, to the point where I was a bit sad when the trailer ended. Also, Chomet seems to get Tati’s deadpan and very French version of Charlie Chaplin-style humor just right.

If Tati’s other films like Playtime and Mr. Hulot’s Holiday are any indication, the film will likely contain almost zero dialogue. In this case, that means zero subtitles, so bring the kids.

VERDICT: Sold. With backup from Michelle Orange.

Blitz Trailer: Jason Statham Does Dirty Harry

Leader image for Blitz Trailer: Jason Statham Does Dirty Harry

Jason Statham clearly does not mind being typecast. After playing the same role over a dozen times, he’s gotten the hard-boiled, soft spoken, totally lethal bad-ass down to an exact science, and he’s so good, you occasionally wonder what would happen if he pushed himself or took on a different type of role. But then a trailer like this UK one for Blitz comes along and reminds you of the totally insane renegade cop action you’d miss out on if Statham ever moved on.

Here, Statham plays a cop named Brant who plays by his own rules and is furious with a on-the-loose cop-killer. Dirty Brant admittedly does not roll of the tongue very well, so they named this movie after the villain, who, according to the trailer goes by Blitz - as in Blitzkrieg.

The images at first look pretty by the numbers, but there’s enough WTF moments in this trailer including a quick cut to an overweight stripper and a puzzling line about a criminal updating his Facebook status to make me think this one might be more like Crank with a straight face. Either way, just try not to smile as the supervisor yells “Do not let Brant engage!” while Statham ignores orders and continues in high speed, probably destructive pursuit of the villain.

Verdict: Let Brant engage.
